Get To Know The Reading Framework
Early Years practitioners would be wise to get to know the updated reading framework.
In July 2023, the Department for Education updated the framework and our EYFS lead, Amanda Quirk, explains why this is important.
“The Reading Framework’s key objective is to help schools to meet the expectations set out in the Early Years Foundation Stage statutory framework and the national curriculum. I encourage the settings I visit to review it, know it and embed the framework into their everyday practices.”
The framework aligns with Ofsted’s Education Inspection Framework and has been designed to provide guidance about how reading should be taught in primary schools. It focuses on supporting leaders and teachers to make sure that their pupils start secondary school as confident readers, able to engage with the challenges of a wider curriculum.
This approach is not only valuable to primary schools, but also to secondary school teachers to understand how reading is taught from the very beginning and how it develops before pupils enter year 7. The framework outlines some of the different challenges of teaching reading in the secondary curriculum and provides support for secondary schools in teaching pupils who have not yet met those expectations in reading.
If an Early Years’ setting would like to discuss how they embed the framework, please contact Amanda on aquirk@wpat or call 07897 280909 to make a time to discuss this important resource.
