Implementing a Whole School Approach to Problem-Solving
‘Implementation doesn’t occur in a neat and linear fashion: strategies and phases overlap and are revisited over time. As such, implementation is best treated as a process of ongoing learning that adapts to the changing needs of the school.’
Helen Wright, ELE and Mathematics Consultant at Aspire Educational Trust, has shared a blog for Aspirer Research School on implementing a whole-school approach to problem-solving in mathematics.
EEF Evaluations of Early Years Maths
The EEF has published findings from a study of early years programme called Reception Jigsaw and Parents.
The Jigsaw programme, from White Rose Maths, is designed to support reception teachers and teaching assistants in improving mathematics teaching and pupil outcomes. The findings in longitudinal follow-up analysis showed that Reception Jigsaw could have a positive, long-term impact on children’s progress.
The report was produced as part of the EEF’s increased focus on the early years, and to building up the evidence base in this crucial phase of the education system.
Thinking Mathematically
Blackpool Research School highlight that the Thinking Mathematically EEF pilot is now open for recruitment. Thinking Mathematically is a secondary school programme aimed at improving the problem-solving skills of pupils in Year 7.

Schools & Families Programme
The charity National Numeracy has a new, fully-funded Schools & Families Programme available for primary schools in 2024 – 25. They have 40 primary schools places across the country, including at least 10 from the North West. The deadline for applications is Friday 31st May 2024.
The programme provides schools with CPD training, resources and activities to support them in improving children’s numeracy, whilst also increasing the confidence of the adults who support them. The aims are:
- To increase pupils’ confidence with numbers, positive feelings about maths and awareness of the value of maths outside the classroom.
- To increase parents’, carers’ and school staff’s confidence in supporting children with maths.
Schools will be selected ls in June; those with a higher percentage of pupils eligible for free school meals will be prioritised. Contact Beth Barnes, Schools & Families Programme Manager for any questions 01273 915044
