New NPQ for Leading Primary Mathematics for 2024

The DfE have published the new National Professional Qualification framework for Leading Primary Maths.

This provides a 5th specialist NPQ that teachers can access as part of their continuing professional development. Generate Teaching Hub is preparing to offer locally based cohorts of ALL NPQs in 2023/24 and that will include a Leading Primary Maths (NPQLPM) offer from 2024 onwards. We are working with all our local Maths Hubs to coordinate delivery of this new programme.

Who is it for?

The new NPQLPM is for those who have responsibilities for leading and promoting primary mathematics across a school. The NPQ will be aimed at those who already have a secure understanding of mastery approaches and will build their leadership capability to enable them toto improve mastery teaching of mathematics across a school. It is expected that participants will have completed a minimum of one year of the Teaching for Mastery programme or have secure mastery expertise from another equivalent programme.

All specialist and leadership the NPQs will remain funded to state schools (subject to conditions) for the next academic year 2024/25 plus an enhanced bursary for small schools has been announced.

The DfE have released summary details of the NPQ in Leading Primary Mathematics with FAQs for interested teachers and leaders.

Maths Hubs have been central to the design of the framework for this new NPQ, and we are please Maths Hub Cheshire & Wirral – one of our local partners – has been a key contributor.

We encourage school leaders to identify how colleagues obtaining NPQs will assist in their individual professional development but also to be clear on the expected impact and process for embedding their learning in your setting.
