Early Years Leadership

The NPQEYL is for teachers who have, or are aspiring to have, responsibilities for leading Early Years across a primary school, nursery or childminding provision. The programme will support you in developing the tools to establish and – more importantly— sustain your organisation’s strategic direction. Learn how to create an effective culture and align your staff in your setting’s mission.

You’ll develop expertise in the knowledge, skills and concepts for leading an Early Years setting. These include best practice around child development and additional and specialist educational needs, as well as culture, organisational management and partnerships you may make as the leader of an Early Years setting.

The programme has a practical focus. You’ll be supported to make small but important changes to your and others’ practice throughout the programme. This will conclude with the implementation module and practical implementation cycle of the programme.

Applicants must have full support from their school/organisation. A head teacher, member of the SLT or line manager must confirm their support, and that all information submitted is true and correct. To apply for the NPQLBC, applicants must have the following:

  • Online seminars

  • Face to Face Events 2 (totalling 16 hours)

  • Total Learning Hours 77 hours

Following successful completion of NPQ training, you will undertake an assessment to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding.

Your assessment will consist of reading a short case study and answering key questions. They are ‘open book’ assessments which means you will have access to all content and materials to support you with your answer. You will have eight days to complete your assessment, this is designed to provide flexibility to complete it around personal and professional commitments.

Your assessment will be marked using a comparative judgement and will be reviewed by several assessors, before being verified by an external moderator. The Department for Education (DfE) will award you your qualification directly. You will receive your result around three months after completing the assessment.

To apply for this NPQ, applicants must complete the application form on our website (link to the EYL application).

As part of the process, you will be required to complete your registration on the DfE portal (link https://register-national-professional-qualifications.education.gov.uk/)
