02 Early Career Teacher Entitlement & ECF
Induction Tutors
We were delighted to celebrate such strong engagement in ECTE training during the Autumn Term.
- 100% of our Year 1 ECTs following the Early Career Training Programme (ECTP) met their engagement milestone. We hope that they have found their training, along with their mentor support effective in supporting them on their ECTE journey.
- Our ECTP Mentors also achieved 100% engagement, showing their fantastic commitment to ensure they develop their skills to support their ECTs effectively.
We know that many Induction Tutors check their ECT and Mentor engagement with the ECTP regularly via Brightspace. If you are a new Induction Tutor or would like more support with this, do take a look at this Teach First video School Induction Tutor view of Brightspace - YouTube. Only Induction Tutors registered with the DfE have access to this function.
Registering New ECTS and Mentors
If you have recently appointed an ECT, please ensure that you have registered them for their induction. Follow the two steps below register your ECTs and Mentors.
- All ECTs and Mentors need to be registered on the DfE portal to formally register their training and gain access to the online learning platform
- All ECTs need to have their Induction registered with an Appropriate Body
Brand new ECTs appointed after February Half Term will join the April Cohort for training. Dates of Welcome Conferences and seminars for this cohort will be sent out in due course. If you need have any questions about registering new ECTs or Mentors do contact the team hub@wpat.uk.
Early Career Mentors
During the last half term, it was great to speak to so many mentors at training events and on quality assurance visits to gain some valuable feedback on the ECTP. Lots of mentors have highlighted that support navigating Brightspace (especially in the first few weeks of mentoring) would be really valuable. We are already looking at our training for next year, along with colleagues from Teach First, to ensure that mentors can hit the ground running with Brightspace.
In the meantime, there are some links accessed via My Teach First to support you.
- A guide on how to use Brightspace is available here: How to use Brightspace | Teach First
- A mentor’s video guide is also available here: Mentor view on Brightspace which includes mentor specific examples for you to follow.

For those mentors supporting a Year 1 ECT, there are regular diagnostic activities for you to complete which create a more bespoke learning pathway for your ECT. Our recent monitoring has highlighted that some mentors are not yet using this tool. If you are unsure how to access or complete these activities, do take a look at the clip below.

There is so much evidence that suggests the support which ECTs receive from their mentor has the biggest impact on their teaching practice so a huge thank you!!!! We know that mentors go above and beyond to support their ECTs in ensuring that they have the very best start to the profession.
Early Career Teachers
Well done! We are more than halfway through the school year! You’re probably now heading towards end of term assessments, pupil progress meetings, parents’ evenings and all of those extra things you need to navigate as a teacher, that you’re not aware of until you become a teacher! Keep going - you’re doing a great job!
Amidst the busyness of school life, it is difficult to juggle all the competing priorities you have as a teacher. Please remember to keep up to date with your ECTP training on Brightspace. As you know, engagement with the training programme is tracked by the DfE and it’s important that you keep up to date. If you’ve got any questions or need support with Brightspace, do get in touch and the team will be happy to help hub@wpat.uk.
Your next Professional Progress Review will be taking place this term. This is part of the statutory induction process when the Appropriate Body receive an update on your progress towards meeting the Teachers’ Standards. Do make sure you take the time to talk through your progress with your Induction Tutor and are clear about any further next steps for development. Also take the opportunity to reflect on how far you have come as you complete your second term as a teacher. There are lots of examples of good practice on ECT Manager, if you are wondering how you should structure your ECT comments on your review.
If you have any questions about your statutory induction, do get in touch with Cath O’Neill, our AB Co-ordinator, who is there to support you.
